Pair of Sculptural Thuya Burl Wood Club Chairs, 1970s
A stunning and exceptionally rare pair of sculptural thuya burl veneer club chairs. Thuya is an exotic wood with coloring varying from a rich, lustrous golden brown to nearly black. The eyes, perfectly round, are scattered about in some burls like the figure in bird's-eye maple; in others they are grouped as islands. An exquisite wood, today these burls are very scarce and hard to locate, extract, and transport. High demand over the centuries has greatly reduced the Thuya forests - native to the Atlas mountains east of Essaouira, Morocco - and looking for underground burls is something like sifting through sand for grains of gold. These exquisite, one-of-a-kind chairs feature a stunning sculptural base and custom black leather upholstery with nailhead trim. Circa 1970s.
DIMENSIONS: 24" H x 36" W x 22" D
CONDITION: Overall very good vintage condition, with minor wear consistent with age. One chair has 1.5" hole on the underside, which cannot be seen unless chair is flipped over. No lifting of veneer. Unsure of base material, but very heavy.
