Vintage Tiffany & Co. Sterling Silver Bean Frame by Elsa Peretti

Elsa Peretti's  iconic "bean" design is defined by it's organic contours and sensuous curves, symbolizing the origin of life and the sculptural beauty found in nature.  This minimalist bean-shaped frame is emblematic of Peretti's vision of the essence of nature and humanity.  Made of solid sterling silver (marked 925), polished to a sleek finish, with a grosgrain silk and leather easel back. Signed Elsa Peretti. Made in Spain. This product is no longer made by Tiffany and is a rare find.

ELSA PERETTI: Elsa Peretti (b. Florence, Italy, 1940 - 2021) was an Italian jewelry designer,  philanthropist, and fashion model. Educated in Rome and Switzerland, she pursued a degree in interior design and worked for the Milanese architect Dado Torrigiani.  After moving to New York in the 60s, Peretti became one of Halston's favored models and a frequent regular of Studio 54, keeping company with the likes of Andy Warhol, Bianca Jagger, Cher, and other socialites.

In 1969, Peretti began creating new jewelry styles for a handful of fashion designers in NYC, her first design being a two-inch sterling silver bud vase pendant on a leather chain. By 1971, she was designing jewelry for Halston, continuing to use silver as a luxury material. Actress Liza Minnelli recalled encountering Peretti's work after Halston advised her to try wearing silver: "My god... Elsa brought out all these things... Everything was so sensual, so sexy. I just loved it."

Her arrival at Tiffany in 1974 signaled a revolution in jewelry design. On the debut of her first collection -- with works described as "revolutionary", "timeless, distinct and modern" --  it sold out and elevated sterling silver to luxury status overnight. Modern art was an influence; she cited Alexander Calder and Henry Moore's sculptures as inspirations. A true pioneer of design, her unique creations were imbued  with a never-before-seen organic aesthetic. Having forever changed the way women wear jewelry, Peretti’s legacy will remain constant source of inspiration. Her jewelry and design pieces for Tiffany & Co. are included in the 20th century collection of the British Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, among others.
