William Fett, Another Dawn, 1978 - 84

William Fett, Another Dawn, 1978 - 84

An impressive and vibrant watercolor by American artist William Fett, titled "Another Dawn (Distinto Amanecer)." This is an abstract, surrealist-style painting -- featuring lush, verdant greens and the vivid red, oranges, and purples of early morning sunrise -- from the artist's Mexican Landscape era. Watercolor on Arches rag paper, signed and dated lower right, along with inscription en verso.  In original metal frame.

WILLIAM FETT (1918-2006) Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, William Fett was a painter who worked most profoundly in abstract, surrealist style landscapes, often based on scenes from Mexico. He graduated from the School of the Art Institute in Chicago in 1941. From there he undertook several extended visits to Mexico after making the acquaintance of expatriate Surrealist artists who had escaped the unhealthy turmoil of European upheavals.

Some of his Mexican watercolors were accorded a one-man show at Durlacher Brothers Gallery in New York in October of 1943. The positive response resulted in acquisition of work by the Museum of Modern Art, where he has been in three exhibitions between 1943 and 1981, including the exhibition Romantic Painting in America (1944), in which he was shown alongside work by George Grosz, Lyonel Feininger, John Marin and Edward Hopper. Fett served as Professor of Drawing and Painting at the Washington University, St. Louis School of Art between 1946 and 1981, until he retired as Professor Emeritus of Fine Arts. From 1982 through 1983, he was acting Professor of Painting at the San Antonio Art Institute in Texas. He later returned to Mexico City, where he died September 10, 2006. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Getty Museum, among others.
